Overview

Loading Docks

Loading docks are among the highest-stress concrete applications in commercial construction — subjected to continuous heavy truck traffic, impact loads, and weather exposure. Liaison Concrete Construction builds heavy-duty concrete loading dock pads, dock pits, approach slabs, and truck courts for warehouses, distribution centers, and industrial facilities across Northern California. Our dock work is built to handle constant traffic without premature deterioration or settlement.

What It Is

What Is Loading Docks?

Commercial loading dock concrete includes the dock approach slab (where trucks maneuver and position), the dock pit or leveler pocket (the recessed area that houses the dock leveler equipment), the dock face wall (the structure trucks back against), and the truck court (the area where trucks circulate and park while waiting). All of these elements experience heavy concentrated loads and must be designed and constructed to resist cracking, spalling, and edge damage under constant commercial use.

Local Expertise

Northern California Construction Considerations

Loading dock slabs in California's climate face significant challenges — thermal cycling in the Central Valley creates expansion and contraction stress, while Bay Area moisture exposure demands careful joint sealing and drainage design. We specify and place fiber-reinforced or post-tensioned concrete where required for heavy-traffic applications, and detail joint locations to prevent edge spalling at high-stress transition points.

Why It Matters

Why Proper Loading Docks Installation Matters

A loading dock that deteriorates prematurely creates safety hazards, operational disruptions, and expensive emergency repairs. Spalled edges, sunken approaches, and cracked dock pits force facilities offline and damage equipment. Properly designed and constructed dock concrete — with adequate thickness, reinforcement, and joint detailing — protects your facility's operational continuity for decades.

Common Questions

Loading Docks FAQs

Commercial loading dock slabs are typically 8" to 12" thick depending on expected loads, traffic frequency, and soil conditions. Dock pit areas require additional reinforcement and thickened edges. We size slabs based on the structural engineer's recommendation and project specifications.

Yes. Dock leveler pit construction is a core part of our loading dock work. We construct pit pockets to the dimensions specified by the leveler manufacturer and set embeds for dock bumpers, restraints, and seals.

Yes. We evaluate existing dock conditions and provide demolition and replacement scopes for deteriorated approach slabs and dock pits. Repairs are designed to integrate with existing structures and restore full load capacity.
